ZACHOR JEWISH CUTURE FESTIVAL JUNE 14, 2014 Collective Memory of Bialystoker Jews by Mark Halpern
I am so very pleased to be here speaking to you at the Third Annual Conference on Jews in Eastern Europe and the Seventh Annual ZACHOR Jewish Culture Festival. This City and this Festival are so very close to my heart and I will explain why. This Conference is about Jewish women. My talk is about two Jewish women from Bialystok; Chana GERSHOWITZ PERLIS, my grandmother and her sister, Fania GERSHOWITZ SZKULNIK. They represent 100,000 Bialystok Jews who left Bialystok before the War. Chana went to the United States and Fania to Israel. I was born in the United States and have lived there almost all my life. However, my mother was born in this city in 1910 and generations of my family before her lived and worked in Bialystok, Tykocin, Grodek, Pieszczaniki, Zabludow, Michalowo, Krynki, and Ciechanowiec. ZACHOR is a Hebrew word meaning REMEMBER. In the Hebrew Bible - the Torah - we Jews are commanded to REMEMBER. This is a fundamental duty of our religion. Being a Jew is more than religion. Jews are a people with a unique history - a story, a narrative that ties Jews around the world together. Since the times of the Babylonian exile in 6th Century before the Common Era, Jews have been dispersed from their homes due to exile, banishment, or "assisted" migration. In the twelfth to seventeenth centuries, Poland was the most tolerant country in Europe and became the destination for persecuted Jewish communities. According to some sources, about three-quarters of all Jews lived in Poland by the middle of the 16th century. The history of the Polish people and the Jewish people are different, but there are shared threads of history from the 13th Century until World War II. I am not a historian like many of you and I cannot tell the story of these two peoples. I only want to point out that both the Poles and the Jews are resilient people who have bounced back from diversity many times. Poland today is a stable, growing democracy. Israel is also a stable, growing democracy. Jews around the world are tied together by stories of their history, by common religious practices, and by faith. ZACHOR, we remember. In the thirteenth through seventeenth centuries, Poland was the destination choice for Jews. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that destination became the United States, which at that time and today is a tolerant country. This is MY history. One that I share with many Jews. ZACHOR, I remember. My mother, her parents, her grandparents, her brothers, and the large extended family, who lived in Bialystok on ulica Polna, now ulica Warynskiego, ulica Nowy Swiat, and ulica Mazowiecka until the 1930s, had many memories. Descendants of these people now live in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, South Africa, Australia, and Israel. My Israeli cousin has accompanied me here to this Festival and will be performing at the Opera House tonight. It is my duty, a duty I took on recently, to help in recreating those memories. In my humble opinion, my ancestors' memories are my memories. Their memories are your memories. Your memories are my memories. We share a common history. In some small way, this 2-day Festival becomes another shared memory to record for the ages. When I was a little boy, I lived downstairs from my grandfather, who was born in this city in 1879. I barely knew him. I was ten years old when he died. He was a quiet man, but when he talked of Bialystok, I could tell how proud he was to have been a Bialystoker and that he yearned to be back there. Like many Bialystok emigrants, he felt a deep ambivalence over leaving his home town. It was not until I recognized my duty to remember that I came to appreciate the unbreakable connection of Jewish emigrants to their ancestral city. They were so proud to be Bialystokers. Bialystok was unique. Bialystok was special. Bialystok was energetic. Bialystok was creative. Bialystok was organized. After emigration from Bialystok, these traits of Bialystok and Bialystokers were transferred to their destination. The 1897 Russian Census enumerated almost 48,000 Jews in Bialystok - roughly three-quarters of the population. From the mid nineteenth century to the early twentieth century (about 1860 to 1935), approximately 100,000 Jews migrated from Bialystok, about one-half of them to the United States. This migration was mostly in response to economic recession and political uncertainty. As soon as they arrived, Bialystoker immigrants formed organizations, societies - what Jews call Landsmanschaften - to organize the essentials of the community. A place to meet, a place to pray, a place to bury the dead, a place to help the less fortunate. You get the picture. There were over 70 such organizations. In the United States, in New York City, in Paterson and Newark, New Jersey, in Philadelphia, Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, and Los Angeles. In Montreal and Toronto, Canada. In Mexico City, Havana, Cuba, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. In Melbourne, Australia and Johannesburg, South Africa. And in Israel where the village of Kiryat Bialystok still stands in the city of Yahud. Today Israel still has a Bialystoker communal society as does Buenos Aires and Melbourne. Although the New York Bialystoker Center and Old Age Home closed down last year, the Bialystoker Synagogue in New York still functions. The street on which the Bialystoker Synagogue sits is Bialystoker Place. This migrant town-based organizational phenomenon was found in groups of immigrants from many towns in Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, and Belarus. But Bialystok holds a special place in the history of these immigrant organizations. Rebecca Kobrin, a Professor of Eastern European Jewish History at Columbia University in New York, who does not have roots in this area, chose Bialystok as the subject of her book, a scholarly case study of immigrant experience of Jews from a town in eastern Europe. The title of the book is Jewish Bialystok and Its Diaspora. This book is being translated into Polish by the Borderland Foundation in Sejny and will hopefully be available in Bialystok soon. I first came to Bialystok in 1996 on a business trip to Poland. I walked in the footsteps of my ancestors through the areas that once were home to thriving Jewish communities, through the old cemeteries where my ancestors lay, and through the streets where historical monuments and plaques identify important people, events, and places in the lives of my people. I knew there were some people from Bialystok and former Jewish residents of Bialystok who cared. I found out that there was an annual memorial ceremony to the victims of the Nazi extermination machine every August. But was the memory of that tragedy the only memory? My answer was NO! This is why the ZACHOR Festival is so important to me. This is about LIFE, about the lives my ancestors lived before continuing their lives in the United States, Israel, and other countries. After that first visit in Bialystok, I went back home. I wanted to know more about my family, but I had nobody to talk to. I had waited too long and all of my relatives who lived in Bialystok were deceased. I knew some names and I knew that my family had been textile weavers in Bialystok and then in Paterson, New Jersey. It became very clear that tracing my family history and understanding the events of the day - the history of the City and surrounding towns and the relationships of the local people and their government - were complementary pursuits. I volunteered to help Jewish Records Indexing - Poland to index the Jewish birth, marriage, death, and divorce records housed at the Polish State Archive branch in Bialystok. I later founded the BIALYGen group - now numbering 1,000 people interested in their Jewish family histories from Bialystok and nearby towns. I volunteered to help preserve the Bagnowka Jewish cemetery. And I am thankful and supportive of Lucy Lisowska and her organization that are dedicated to preserving the Jewish history and culture of this great city. Since my first trip in 1996, I have been back to Bialystok at least eight times. Thanks to The Poland-Israel Centre for Citizenship Education, its President Lucy Lisowska, the Jewish Communities of Warsaw and the administration of Bialystok Prezident Truskolaski, the ability to REMEMBER has improved for me and my people. The Bagnowka Jewish Cemetery has been partially restored, cleaned up, and secured. Just last week, the Poland-Israel Center had a student group from San Francisco working to clean the Cemetery. I want to thank Mayor Truskolaski and the Bialystok City government for working with and supporting Jewish organizations to fence the Bagnowka Cemetery, to erect a memorial at the location of the Jewish Cemetery on ulica Bema, to remove the fragments of Jewish tombstones that were used for construction of part of the Rynek (the town square), to provide a building and seed money for a possible Bialystok Jewish Museum, and to sponsor this festival since 2008. Before I close, I want to share with you my childhood memory of Bialystok. When my mother and her two brothers would get together at a family meal or on a holiday, the talk and good natured kidding would turn to their memories of Bialystok - the good times and the bad times. No matter whether they were talking of good or bad times, Bialystok always seemed to be a far-off place of their fascination. The only tangible part of Bialystok was the Bialy rolls my father, who was a grocer, would bring home. What are Bialy rolls? Bialys are a crusty, onion topped round rolls indented in the center with toasted onion and poppy seeds. This roll was a diet staple for Bialystoker Jews, which they brought with them when they migrated. Today, the only place I know where authentic Bialys are made is New York City. When I visited Bialystok, I looked for Bialy rolls. I found a version of a Bialy at the now closed New York Bagel shop on ulica Lipowa across from the Hotel Cristal. I returned in 2012 and found a very well presented and tasty version of Bialys at the Esperanto Café. But, you still have to go to New York City for an authentic Bialy. I am very grateful to everyone who helps to make this Conference and festival a success - the organizers, the workers, the speakers, the performers, and the audience. I promised myself many years ago that I would attend ZACHOR one day. In the past, my travel to Poland, in support of my volunteer work, has not coincided with the dates of ZACHOR. This year, I made sure that did not happen. I hope to see you all in the years to come.

David Krakauer (USA)
An American clarinetist, who plays mainly Klezmer music. He became famous in the late 1908s, when he became a member of the The Klezmatics music band. Before, Krakauer he had worked as a clarinetist in the orchestra and experimented with modern music. Klezmer Madness!, David Krakauer’s band, blends traditional Klezmer music with modern music genres. The musician has also cooperated with Kronos Quartet.
David Krakauer’s activity is a rare blend of artistry and uniqueness. The artist has cooperated with many worldwide music bands and orchestras. He starts at the most prestigious international festivals.

Acoustic Acrobats (Kraków)
April 2010 is the date when the Acoustic Acrobats Band was born. It was at that time, when facing the need to introduce changes in our former band and wishing to open up to the ethno music from different parts of the world, some of the co-operating musicians decided to start afresh. After a few months of formation of the artistic shape of the new band, at the beginning of 2011 the independent group, Acoustic Acrobats, has been launched. The years 2008-2010 were extremely busy but also enchanting for us. In 36 months, still partly as the Max Klezmer Band and the Max Klezmer Band Acoustic Acrobats, we played nearly 200 concerts in Poland, in nine European countries, as well as in Jamaica and Africa.
Their music marries ethno and jazz music but you can also capture sounds characteristic of Klezmer and Balkan music.

Orkiestra Klezmerska Teatru Sejneńskiego (Sejny) Klezmer Orchestra of the Sejny Theater
The orchestra is formed by young people aligned to The Centre “Borderland of Arts, Cultures and Nations” in Sejny. It was founded a few years ago, when the theatrical adaptation of Szymon An-ski’s play ‘Dybbuk’ was being arranged. Since then, young people from Sejny, on the Polish-Lithuanian borderland, have been fascinated by Klezmer music. Thanks to the Jewish Cultural Festival in Krakow, where the Sejny orchestra performed a few times, young musicians made close acquaintances with famous US Klezmer musicians, such as David Krakauer, Michael Alpert, Deborą Strauss, Jeff Warschauer, Stuart Brotman, Frank London and Paul Brody.

Ostatnie Takie Trio (Warsaw)
The band dates back to the mid-1980s, when it was set up in Wrocław. Gustaw Szepke, a composer, guitar player and a singer is the only original member of the band. The Trio was active up until the early 1990s, and afterwards they performed only occasionally. The band was reactivated in 2011, when it gave a supporting concert of Matisjahu in the Nożyk Synagogue in Warsaw. The band plays mainly Psalms (Tehilim) in their own interpretations, mixing various styles and music genres.
The music band’s members: Gustaw Szepke (guitar, singer), Andrzej Jaskuła (bass guitar), Andrzej Waśniewski (keyboard), Piotr Kowalik (drums).
Aleksander Tansman Quartet (Białystok)
The quartet was set up in 2008 as a chamber music band in the Podlaskie Opera and Philharmonic – the European Arts Center in Białystok. The artists promote top quality chamber music, especially compositions by a Polish composer Aleksaner Tansman. The band is formed by Rafał Dudzik (first violin), Ewa Gromska (second violin), Jakub Grabe-Zaremba (viola), Szymon Stępka (cello).

Dolly’s Circus (Israel)
This rock punk music band was born in the dark rooms of Tel Aviv pubs. Unique music played by Dolly’s Circus makes the spirit of authentic rock n’roll alive, overshadowing its banal tunes. The rock show of the band, called ‘Tzwika, go to prison’, a punk concert covering children’s songs by Dudu Zar as well as their album called “Mirror Mirror’, released by NMC, made Dolly’s Circus one of the leading alternative music bands throughout Israel. The team is in the midst of recording their second album.

Gerard Edery (USA)
Gerard Edery is a musician (singer, guitar and sax player) and a composer. Recognized as a leading musical folklorist , he is a master of Sephardic songs. His rich repertoire includes a great number of ethnic and folk songs, in which he combines traditional musical forms from throughout world. He sings in fifteen languages and he speaks fluently in four of them. He is constantly seeking to discover new songs, melodies and stories from all around the world and, by including them in his repertoire, preserves them (often interpreting them in various novel ways). Gerard Edery performed at the gala concert at the 4th edition of the Zachor Jewish Cultural Festival in 2011.

Grupa Rafała Kmity (Rafał Kmita’s group)
It was founded in 1993. Since then, it has performed theatrical works, such as : ‘Wszyscyśmy z jednego szynela’ (1997), ‘Ca-sting’ (rok 2002), ‘Aj waj! czyli historie z cynamonem’ (2005) and cabaret performances: ‘Głusi jak pies’ (1993), ‘Trzy zdania o umierani’ (1994) and many more.
‘Aj waj! czyli historie z cynamonem’ is a performance, based on Jewish cultural motifs, which equally blends features of theater and cabaret. Directed by two Krakow artists, Rafał Kmita (lyrics, script and direction) and Bolesław Rawski (compositions and interpretations), the performance is a set of episodes, where monologues and songs bring back to life the atmosphere of 19th-century Jewish districts and towns. No wonder, then, that it became a theater blockbuster in 2005.
